Polish and Ukrainian Jewish Genealogy Expert Richard Cooper

Lending his expertise to both sessions of Ask the Expert, is Ric Cooper, one of the leading authorities on Ukrainian-Jewish genealogy in Britain, who should be able to answer most of our visitors queries on Ukrainian Jewish genealogy. He’s an acknowledged expert on Polish Jewish genealogy too, particularly the history and geography – the shifting borders and changing place-names – of partitioned Poland from 1772 to 1914, with particular emphasis on Galicia, Congress (or Kingdom) of Poland and Ukraine.

Ric has also extensively studied emigration from the Russian and Austro-Hungarian Empires to Western Europe, the British Isles and the USA. He can also tell you all about the various censuses and equivalent family lists between 1790 and 1940 in England, USA, Poland and the Ukraine:.

Ric is particularly happy to help absolute beginners and believes passionately that there’s no such thing as a stupid question. So bring yours on!

Finding Jewish Roots in Poland by Susan Fifer B.Ed

Susan Fifer, a former teacher, worked in her later career in learning and assessment policy in vocational education. Her interest in her family history was sparked in 1974, since when she has pursued her research avidly, aided by a long-standing interest in computers and technology.

She is the author of the JGSGB Guide to Jewish Genealogy in Poland and a book on using technology for family history in the Older and Wiser series published by Wiley and the Third Age Trust.

In her talk Sue will show us how, by developing a variety of personal research skills, using family knowledge and taking advantage of the help and support available though the online community – including JGSGB – you can build up a picture of who your ancestors were and where they came from.

Many researchers start their genealogical journey knowing nothing more than that their ancestors came from “Russian Poland.” Changes in the political landscape of Europe in the last hundred and fifty years can make retracing your ancestors’ journey an apparently overwhelming task. Coming and listening to Sue could help to make it easier.

Let’s all meet at the fair

The JGSGB (Jewish Genealogical Society of Great Britain) will hold its first Family History Fair in the De Vere Village Urban Resort in Elstree on 7th July 2013.
